VMFA-314 and VMFA-142 Combat tours
with the same F/A-18's
On 17 January 1991, the Black Knights of
VMFA-314 launched their F/A-18A aircraft
into the night sky to strike Iraqi targets in
southern Iraq and Kuwait in the opening
phase of Operation Desert Storm. With
them were BuNo's 162469 and 162398.
Fourteen years later, The Gators of VMFA-
142 would take these same two F/A-18's,
now upgraded to A+ standards, back to
Iraq. This time flying from deep inside Iraq
at Al Asad Air Base.
Flying Leathernecks has captured both
aircraft as they appeared during each
conflict to provide the modeler with a unique
addition to their collection.
Research by the Flying Leathernecks, with
the assistance of Col Juergen ‘Baron’ Lukas
(formerly of VMFA-314) and LtCol
Theodore Silvester of VMFA-142.
